I have been really into Pinterest lately looking at hair styles and more importantly checking out some of the how to’s available there. I am looking for an easy way to set my hair without heat. Mostly so that I can pass it on here. My hair is stubborn and thick so I figure I’m the best one to try these things on. Here is a popular way that is also easy and gives a good result considering (you know I’m a perfectionist).

The headband technique

A few additional tips are to wet your hair with a spray bottle and use a soft hairspray before you wrap your hair. I usually wrap my hair before bed and then put a shampoo cap on so my hair doesn’t frizz. Just a reality check your hair will not look as good as if you used a curling iron but for a no heat option it works pretty well.

I had to take a moment to tell everyone about this new and exciting treatment that myself and many others have already taken advantage of. It really is awe inspiring.

How many hours a day do you spend on your hair?

I know that after having a baby my available time for styling has diminished almost entirely. I got the Rejuvenol Keratin Smoothing Treatment 3 weeks ago and I am amazed. I can now wash my hair, power dry it (no brush just a blow dryer on high and my hands), and it looks great. Seriously, like its been flat-ironed.

Here is how it works:

Step 1 – I clarify the hair at the shampoo bowl to get the hair squeaky clean and open up the hair cuticle

Step 2 – I power dry the hair to open up the hair cuticle even more

Step 3 – Apply the keratin treatment (the magic ingredient)

Step 4 – Power dry the hair again, in this step the product (which is made up mostly of keratin, collagen, and a small amount of active ingredient) envelops the open hair cuticle and fills the holes (these holes cause frizz) that are caused by color, heat styling and the first 2 steps

Step 5 – Flat iron the hair to seal in the treatment

Then you’re done, your hair looks beautiful and it has to stay straight and dry for 3-4 days. After that you have 4-6 months of beautiful, easy to manage hair.

1. Sebastian Pro Line – Light Shampoo & Conditioner

2.
3. Wella

4. Rusk

5. Graham Webb

I always recommend you buy these products from your hair stylist, unlike some people may think – they are the same price if not less then when you buy at the grocery store. Also your stylist will stand by the products and if they do not suit you most salons will take them back, including mine.

Buy a good round brush! I love the Olivia Garden Ceramic ionic brushes, they will run you about $30 but will last

Product is key I like to use mousse for blow outs and then end with a softening oil

Power Dry your hair until it is about 90% dry (this is the most important tip because otherwise your arms will feel like they are going to fall off before you’re halfway done)

Section the hair into at least 3 sections taking one inch subsections down to dry (if you do too much hair at once you won’t get the same amount of volume)

Elevate the brush 180% for the most volume

Happy Blow Drying!!

I have not written in a while because I am very pregnant. Yay!

There is so much information out there about pregnancy and hair. I have been going through all of it!

My face is fat, my ass is huge, and I am constantly feeling like I look matronly. Who wants that?

I certainly don’t so I decided I had to make a change drastic enough to take all that attention away from my near 200 lbs.

I had one of my coworkers first off add bangs to my current haircut, cut 1 inch off my ends and cut sharp angles into my hair. These sharp angles slim down the face and take attention away from all the things I have been focused on.

I have read in several pregnancy books that you should not change your hair during pregnancy so as a preggo hairdresser I decided to release a different angle.

Sometimes a little change is all we need to start feeling like ourselves again. Now I would not recommend drastic change like cutting 5 inches off your hair or going from blond to brunette, but a little change can go a long way.

The main thing to remember about your curly hair is that unlike someone with straight hair, the cuticle layer of your hair is naturally raised (if you are coloring on top of that then you are opening that cuticle even more). That is why it is so hard to maintain smooth, frizz free curls. Below are some tips that I have learned over the years…

1. Put the comb down, if you need to brush your locks use a wide tooth comb minimally

2. Use paper towels to dry your hair, I know this sounds like a waste but you can reuse the paper towels for a few days this will help tame frizz

3. Find products that work, every curl pattern and form is different find the products that work for you. Some of my clients like Deva Curl products

4. Help reform your curls by using a smoothing balm like Emulsion Control by Rene Furterer then with product in your hand twist your curls so they are thicker and de frizzed then blow dry with a diffuser. If some of your curls are limp you can use a curling iron to form curls (only on dry hair).

5. If you live in an extreme climate (dry, humid, windy) you may want to add a strong hold gel to the smoothing balm, to create more control.

I really liked this article from the Wall Street Journal about people trying to cut corners with their salon visits. I do even have clients that cut their husband’s hair, does it look good, that I don’t know.

So I raise the question, “How good do you want to look?”

In my eyes that is what it comes down to. My business has not suffered so much during this downturn because I am blessed with perfect clients that want to look good all the time. And I am finding that more than anything else people are spacing out their appointments more.

Talk to your stylist if you feel like you can’t afford to come to the salon every 6 weeks, then ask for a cut and color that will last you longer. That means natural highlights, and maybe taking off a little more length then you normally would to maintain healthy looking hair.
